Design Kompany’s Dipika Kohli worked as production manager for Seattle Central Community College’s twice-monthly newspaper, The City Collegian. Dipika teamed with the student editors and writers to come up with design ideas and lay out four issues of the college newspaper (above).
Two sources of inspiration: The Society of News Design’s book, “The Best of Newspaper Design,” and Oregonian news designer Mark Friesen’s site on the faces of daily papers.
Soon after working on the paper’s layout, The Society of Professional Journalists gave The City Collegian a 2006 Mark of Excellence award; it took first place among regional campus papers in the Best All Around category.
“I just can’t say it enough,” said faculty advisor Jeb Wyman. The Collegian has been the luckiest paper on the planet to have you on board. I mean that very sincerely. You have done so much to make us look like a real paper and be regarded as a real paper.”
