DK sponsors auction for Capitol Hill nonprofit Home Alive

Design Kompany just did this invitation package design for Capitol Hill, Seattle-based nonprofit Home Alive:

Home Alive auction invitation 2007

When Home Alive, a local safety advocacy organization, came to us for a design project, they had a perfect theme picked out already.

“Bees,” said Chris Harvey, one of Home Alive’s auction organizers. “Bees have a natural defense system, but their role in pollination of flowers make them essential in creating beauty in the world. They are a symbol of beauty, but also, they teach us: don’t disrespect boundaries, or else.”

Home Alive had already sent out a bee-themed save-the-date postcard, but wanted a truly special invitation package to follow up. They wanted to impress the more than 1,000 patrons who’ve expressed interest in attending Home Alive’s annual fund-raising event in April.

Design Kompany sat down with the Home Alive team of volunteers and staff for our signature creative brief and mood board sessions. DK asked lots of questions about what would make this event special and appealing, and what makes the organization work. What emerged is:

1) Home Alive has a brand that is founded on edgy, high-impact imagery
2) Home Alive has loyal supporters.
3) The auction is a total experience special event, and
4) The invitation’s foremost mission is to excite Home Alive’s supporters for this year’s spectacle

Once we understood the project, our team set out to do what each of us do best. Creative Director Dipika Kohli drew a cover image. Illustrator Aaron Barker drew bees, and graphic designer Demelza Hall did the layout for the program and auction item guide. Copywriter Jace Krause tightened the organization’s mission brief on the back of the invitation. And DK’s Akira Morita coordinated the production with Chris, priced out the printing, and put together the elements in a coherent package.

Chris had this to say: “Thank you so, so much! This is fantastic!”

Choosing a cheap design company is today’s trend. Nobody is looking for the high tech brand to do the job these days. Outsource the work to the proper channel that have extensive resources is the best solution. I think that is why small scale company like us can survive in this competitive world especially during economic downturn.
