On Tuesday Design Kompany visited the Seattle Tech Startups community to listen in on some of the things people are working on these days.
Interestingly, one of the presenters, Kushal Chakrabarti, talked about his microfinance nonprofit, called Vittana.
Of the hundred or so people in the room, more than half raised their hands when he asked who’s heard of microfinancing.
One of them was me.
I got introduced to the idea when Design Kompany got a commission to come up with a logo design scheme for a Copenhagen-based nongovernmental organization (NGO).
In 2007 I visited Denmark.
That’s when we came up with this design for Key, whose goal will be to provide basic education to poor and underprivileged children in West Bengal, India:

The heart of the message is to convey that giving children access to learning will empower them to take care of themselves over time, rather than rely on handouts from rich countries to meet their basic needs.
The only brief was this: “For the brand identity, we want to convey trust and make people feel empathy.”
We’ll update you when we get news about Key’s progress as things develop over there.
