
Ping Pong, one of my all-time favorite sports films, is opening at Grand Illusion Cinema in Seattle’s U-district on May 25. Besides being a great tear-jerker of a story, its cinematography — lush, serene but pregnant with energy — makes it a great portrait of modern day Japan in my opinion (for another good example of that, see Tony Takitani, a film based on Haruki Murakami’s short story).
This “undoubtedly the best ping pong movie ever made”(BBC Film critic Jamie Russell) is an adaptation of a manga by genius author Taiyo Matsumoto, whose another work, TekkonKinkreet, just got translated to silverscreen by Animatrix director Michael Arias. That movie plays on June 10, during Seattle International Film Festival. Check them out (phew, that was one heck of name-dropping).–AM
