The more I learn from other designers about how they got into the business of branding, the more I see that really, it’s not that different a story from ours at Design Kompany.
Akira and I wandered downtown on Monday from our perch in Capitol Hill to meet the owners of Woodard and Company, a design studio that does a lot of strategy work and also branding.
Owner Allen Woodard told us that after working for a bunch of ad agencies around town he realized he just wanted to own a small business.
Allen said his favorite kind of project is helping business people figure out their strategy, something we have been working on right here at Design Kompany. Matter of fact, I just e-mailed our two-page vision statement off for review.
But getting back to designers.
Last week I called up Chris Davis at Horsepower Design. I noticed the address was around the corner from us and was wondering if I could pick his brain on the industry, changes, and so on as we are in the midst of revamping Design Kompany 2.0.
Anyways, when I asked about pricing and stuff, he told me not to worry about competing with any other designers. What I needed to do was think about the kind of living we’d like to have, and charge accordingly.
That reminded me of the E-Lance thing. –DK
