Poetry and Art

Spoken word poetry
is on this weekend. I first got introduced to poetry slams in Brooklyn, and more recently have stopped into some of the ones Eleventh Hour Productions puts on in Fremont. What’s neat is being in the same room with a bunch of people saying what’s really on their minds–the kind of stuff it’s hard to talk about in casual, polite, everyday conversation. “It has to be the poets, artists, musicians and writers who can point out that our civilisational emperor has no clothes,” writes Satish Kumar in the last issue of 2006 of Resurgence, the UK magazine he edits. No wonder you hear a lot of criticism and angst in the slew of words that ferry forth from this engaging, volatile crowd. Flying spit? Now there’s something to put on the calendar. –DK
