I had two real-life, Internet-related discussions over the weekend. The first was at a monthly mixer for the Society of Professional Journalists, a crowd that meets to talk about writing, editing, publishing and design. We chatted about how print media is dying (like this is news!) and giving way to Web 2.0. I got the first inkling of this when I was a reporter for a print publication and got a press pass to go to Gnomedex, a pretty neat conference with a bunch of bloggers.
The second thing I went to was a Biznik event on search engine optimization, where I met a lovely group of people who are (mostly) all entrepreneurs. While the speaker told us not to use frames or flash because search engines don’t like them, I chatted with my neighbors about YouTube animations about Italian drivers and why a professional logo isn’t something you want to have done by some guy in India. “I got a quote for a pretty elaborate web site from a guy in India,” says this person on my right, “for just $500!” I told him I wouldn’t do that. That I really think you want to talk to someone face to face about the marketing message before you spend even a ruppee. –DK
