I went to the Seattle Poetry Slam on Tuesday in Fremont. It’s this collection of people who do spoken word art. Sort of a mix of a literary reading and drama. Lots of gesturing and emphatic gazes, and the clever use of silence to punctuate a point. Maybe because we live in Seattle, or maybe because people have a lot of pent-up anger, a lot of themes revolved around: fairness, or the lack thereof, racial tension, and “business as usual” in America.
One of the finalists in the competition was a clever kid named Danny who just made it out from YouthSpeaks. The cool thing was he beat his teacher, who was vying for the spotlight, too. Both were pleased.
