Lots of conversations about the controversial new architecture and logo design commissioned for the grand opening at the North Carolina Museum of Art.
They seem to want to reposition themselves as a high-class contemporary art museum. Interesting. I remember when the new amphitheater went in in the 1990s. Really brilliant job, and a refreshing update to a well-loved and oft-frequented museum when DK was getting degrees and making posters and tees at N.C. State University down the street. Back then we went to a concert or two, and an outdoor film screening of The English Patient, which I remember because of the many matching picnic baskets, blankets, and wine.
What has the North Carolina Art Museum added this time? I’m a little nervous, to tell you the truth.
Haven’t seen it yet, but the newly installed architecture’s been critiqued as “warehouse-like.” Yeesh. The logo’s been called everything under the sun except those things that go beyond merely “acceptable.” Kind of worrying when that happens.
Bad logo by Pentagram
Sadly, this new brand identity is terrible. It seriously is. I am more disappointed because it’s by Pentagram, which is normally very impressive as a slick New York design agency. I like a lot of their past work. Their self-promotional video inspired the making of ours. I wanted to like the new NCMA logo when I heard Pentagram did it but as that awful North Carolina Museum of Art brand identity .jpg loaded on my screen I almost threw up.
Apparently DK wasn’t alone. See these Comments on the thread at NewRaleigh.com.
This weekend’s pick
One of the interesting-looking events for the opener is “Fresh Look: Evolving Art and Design.” It’ll be on Saturday and Sunday. Here’s the blurb:
East Building comes to life with visual and performance art, experimental new media, fashion, and filmmaking:
* Light and sound installations and digital animation developed by the NCSU College of Art and Design’s Advanced Media Lab
* Film, video, and animation short features by talented Tar Heel directors
* UNC School of the Arts art exhibition
* Models from the NCSU College of Art and Design’s Art to Wear student fashion show
* Interactive works of performance art by Greensboro’s Invisible and Elsewhere CollaborativeLocation: East Building
Saturday, April 24 | 11 am–5 pm
Sunday, April 25 | 11 am–3 pm
If there’s ever been a good reason to be in Raleigh, the reopening of the North Carolina Museum of Art is it. Gosh, I hope they still have that lovely Georgia O’Keeffe of the yellow house.
