I’ve thought some over the past months about public art. In part I keep coming back to the tremendous potential of putting art in public places. Done well, it can have an immense power, a power to connect with passersby in ways that much studio art cannot. A question: Is it being done well? And how might “public art done well” even be defined? What is the direction of public art? Is it in need of redefinition or rebirth? —John Boylan
Here are the guest speakers:
- Barbara Goldstein, Public Art Director, City of San Jose
- Carolyn Law, artist who makes public art
- Greg Lundgren, artist who does performance art
- Dan Webb, artist
Says John Boylan: “Next Month: Art and Alcohol.’ And yes, writers and writing are included, and other substances might come into the conversation as well.”
DK and Conversations
Back in March, Design Kompany got to be on a panel for a talk on “Solutions.” It was so much fun to be there and share in the energy of the place. Seattle is full of smart people, and it’s great when they come together in an open forum like this. It’s like being back in college, but better. There’s a range of voices, age groups, and ideas.
