Good, a newish magazine headed by young Ben Goldhirsh, a son of “publishing legend” Bernie Goldhirsh, is maturing rather nicely of late.
Collection of stories that are political but non-partisan, provocative yet objective, and progressive without being overly activist/lobbyist, it is a refreshing take on longer-format journalism. Also notable is its emphasis on graphic design: each printed issue devotes significant pages on some colorful info-graphics usually commissioned to a prominent graphic design team (open, catalogtree), and they have a section called “Project 010″ which is largely about exploring socially responsible design (this ink-less, recycled poster is really brilliant). The Good video clips (check out “meet the candidates”) are also consciously styled (reminiscent of 80s MTV and Schoolhouse Rock), with a lot of (you guessed it) info-graphics.
The web site is quite nicely put together, too; you can tell someone really thought about the user experience (down to the “welcome” message you get when you create an account). Lots to be learned, indeed. —AM
