Norweigan architecture!

Norway based Einar Jarmund of Jarmund Vignaes Architects/Interior Designers

Because I just went to Scandinavia, I am really curious about everything that comes from that part of the world. I just heard the Norway based architect Einar Jarmund of the Oslo architecture firm Jarmund Vignaes will be giving a lecture in Seattle next week.

On their website, sponsor Space.City, a nonprofit “dedicated to spirited public discussion of art, architecture, urbanism and cultural issues in the spatial arts,” doesn’t tell you what the talk’ll be about.

But wow, check out those mountains.

More slides of Norweigan landscapes would be enough of a draw. –DK

This is actually on the same evening as the Vermillion/Arcade opening, and the opening night of By Design programming at Northwest Film Forum. We might still try and hit it all by splitting ourselves… Hey! how about writing a short piece (excerpt from your paper?) for us here?

    Hey Angie,

Here’s some more info I got about the event from the sponsors…

Oslo-based architects Jarmund/Vigsnæs designed the Svalbard Research Centre in an arctic archipelago at 78° north, with the idea that “every commission should be unique with reference to its site and circumstances.”

They modeled building geometry on flows of wind and snow to mitigate snow build-up over doors and windows. Their practice focuses on projects… often closely related to nature and preferably in strong natural settings with a harsh climate, like Svalbard.

Jarmund / Vigsnæs AS Architects MNAL is a 17-person practice, led by partners Einar Jarmund, Håkon Vigsnæs and Alessandra Kosberg. Jarmund received a Master of Architecture degree from the University of Washington in 1989, then taught at the UW in 1990. He returned to Norway to set up Jarmund / Vigsnæs Architects in 1995 with Håkon Vigsnæs. He has since taught at the Oslo School of Architecture, the Bergen School of Architecture, Washington University in St. Louis, and the University of Arizona in Tucson. Noted public projects include the Oslo School of Architecture (2001), the Svalbard Science Center in Spitsbergen, Norway (2005), and the Norwegian Ministry of Defence in Oslo, Norway (2006).

Notes for your paper (and post?) :)

I’m hoping to stop by this one. I went to hear Guy Battle talk about designing for wind flows some time back, based mostly on engineering studies. It was a lecture on sustainable design at REI. Pretty nerdy, very cool.
