Faster in Japanese

In July the Seattle-based Japanese language magazine YouMaga asked Design Kompany to lay out a special section on Northwest day trips. Kind of what Bridget Jones might put together for a collection of “mini-vacations,” except all in Japanese. DK’s Akira Morita took this one on.

The other day we actually went for a day trip, and Akira downloaded some directions to Cougar Mountain onto his iPod. When I went to check if we were turning left or right at some intersection, I go, “It’s in Japanese!”

“Yeah,” he said. “Sometimes it’s easier for me to get to the right page faster if I look things up in Japanese.” Imagine. The Internet is so cluttered with random stuff that it’s easier to zero in on what you’re looking for if you search in a foreign language. Are you listening, Google?

In other news, we are putting together the final touches on the redesign for the Northwest Asian Weekly, another International District-based publication, and recently did some layout for a conference program, too. -DK
