On Tuesday, March 13, wind energy company Global Energy Concepts will host the networking event “Greendrinks” at art gallery Form/Space Atelier. “Greendrinks” will get rolling around 6pm at the gallery, located at 1907 Second Avenue.
The first time I went to a Greendrinks event-last summer, I think-there were maybe 50 people, tops, at a sole proprietor’s office in Pioneer Square. The next thing you know, the people hosting the event are much bigger companies, and they’re booking out the likes of the Seattle Aquarium, Woodland Park Zoo, and a fancy lookout room at Olympic Sculpture Park. What I’m saying is, if you go, expect a crowd.
Out of curiosity, I checked around the American Wind Energy Association’s web site to see where the biggest operating wind farms are in the U.S. According to AWEA:
735 Megawatts Horse Hollow, TX
300 MW Stateline, OR/WA
278 MW King Mountain, TX
So, what about the rest of the world? According to Wikipedia’s entry on wind farms, a 322 MW farm set to be built south of Glasgow will be Europe’s biggest.
I went to a conference in 2005 on wind energy, specifically, that was going on in Seattle. I learned that big points of public opposition to wind farms that have come up in the past are: 1) complaints about disrupted ocean views for offshore farms and 2) concern for birds.
