On Feb. 24 we hosted Dream Kitchen, an open series for people to bring lunch and join us to talk about inspirations, creative projects, and big picture ideas. We’ll run this through March 14.
Last week, one of Design Kompany’s creative directors, Akira Morita, brought the book Dialogue and the Art of Thinking Together by William Isaacs. Akira shared this quote to sum up why we’re launching Dream Kitchen:
“Dialogue, as I define it, is a conversation with a center, not sides. It is a way of taking the energy of our differences and channelling it toward something that has never been created before. It lifts us out of polarization and into a greater common sense, and is thereby a means for accessing the intelligence and coordinated power of groups of people. –William Isaacs”

My company has the same type of brainstorming sessions on Monday morning. We have a room with these great bean bag chairs, and we just lounge, drink coffee and say anything that comes to mind. Some great ideas have come out of this, as well as an appreciation of others perspectives. And the bean bag chairs are a lot of fun.
I think thats a great idea! i wonder if our clients would like that sort of relaxed infomal meeting when choosing a new fitted kitchen design?
We often try to strike up conversation like you are speaking of in our furniture forums. It’s difficult to create a mature, helpful, and progressive conversation that does not degrade to bickering. In the office, we do a lot of imagineering, where the word “no” simply isn’t allowed.
Dear Furniture Decorating,
Thanks for the comment! I’m glad you’re making a place for conversation. Personally the whole idea for Design Kompany was to create a physical space for real-life meetings, just to mix it up and gather new inspiration and energy from other people at the table. More and more people are going online for this kind of thing, and here I am responding to your comment with an electronic paragraph. I’d like to think that as human beings we’ll get back into person-to-person conversations as the “norm” again… You get a lot more out of a dialogue when you can see and hear a person’s expressions and intonations. Oh, and the other thing is, I encourage people to say “no.” No means I disagree, and begs the question, Howcome? Healthy debate is great. It sparks fresh thinking and challenges staid ideals.
I concur with the bean bag furniture.
It helps to have everyone relaxed, and a bean bag chair will certainly do just that!
