This week I noticed a lot is happening around the topic of public space, plus some other things that seem really intriguing to the casual observer of goings-on about town.
Here’s a roundup of what’s on tap:
Design Kompany is a sponsor for Miller Community Center’s Saturday evening inauguration of the newly astroturfed playfield. We are excited to be a part of the festivities, which seem to be expanding by the moment with an added potluck, and clinics for soccer and frisbee. Come out and hang with us, plus grab free ice cream from Blue Bird.
Park(ing) day. Design Kompany participated in some flyering for the big Park(ing) day event that’s gonna be TOMORROW. The deal is, people stake out parking spaces in urban areas and bring chairs, bits of lawn, items to consume, and some reading material. The big idea is to “squat” in these parking spaces and create little public mini-parks around the city. Should be a lot of fun. DK will be stopping by the “Central Park” tomorrow, which will be west of Broadway, on Pine Street between Summit and Boylston Avenue. More about Park(ing) day in Capitol Hill.
Gossamer open house. I met some people who run the new artist collective called Gossamer just next to Tougo coffee shop in the Capitol Hill/Central District. They told me they’re hosting an open house on Saturday, September 19. It’s a cool new store that took the place of a boutique, and they have a bunch of handmade hats, plus other interesting items that people into curiosities might be excited about.
Public art roundtable. I’ll be posting more about this separately, but save the date for an open conversation on Tuesday, September 22 on the topic of public art. You might remember about the controversial Kissing Jets public art we wrote about last year when we stopped by a Sound Transit talk at a Capitol Hill Community Council meeting. It’s billed “John Boylan’s Next Conversation,” and DK is planning to be there. John Boylan generously hosted a conversation at Design Kompany earlier this year: it was called Gather, and the topic was what it means to have “community.” We hosted a potluck at the same time, and it was really pretty darn good.
Decibel. Not free, but definitely GOOD… Just wrote about the upcoming electronic music festival Decibel that’s gonna be happening next week in Seattle-town. This is really one of my favorite events of the year, if only because it seems to be getting better and better. Dancing and music, what could be better than that on a September eve?
Blogging conference. This one isn’t free, but on September 26, Wordcamp Seattle is on. Should be a useful thing for anyone interested in blogging, writing, and all things Wordpress. Unfortunately, they’ve sold out of tickets but there is a waitlist. And DK is on it, hoping for some no-shows at the door. (This did not work when I tried to go see The Proclaimers at The Tractor a few years ago, but I’m hoping blogging conferences are less packed than small, intimate gigs by twins from Scotland.)
