DK’s been very lucky to have talented students approach us for internships in design. After a break in 2008, this year we continue the tradition and welcome Victor Ng as our third summer intern. Victor is into photography and studies design at Carnegie Mellon. Here’s a picture he sent in, and some thoughts he shared after his first day.

I thought I had left the world of “homework” when I tossed that cap into the air last June on my high school graduation.
Because after that, all the “work” I had to do in school didn’t have the same dreaded stigma attached to it. Going to school for design was my big break – and subsequently, so is my internship here at Design Kompany.
I mention homework because last week, Dipika gave me this “homework assignment,” which was to write something about myself. But like I said, this isn’t homework. I don’t have too much to say about myself. I’m an avid photographer and love everything about design (and not just graphic). However, if you really get to know me, you will probably find that my other interests aren’t as predictable. I have a curious fascination with hair culture (ie. hair weaves) and any kind of physical expression of personality. I am interested in the thought process behind fashion, maybe more so than the final product (which means Gareth Pugh shoulder spikes > Valentino gown).
I am similarly fascinated by the production of news shows, like those on CNN. Everything from the way the set is constructed to the running graphics and the (excessively) tan make up they put on Anderson Cooper. I am particularly drawn to designs that reflect the human hand and vernacular in its production (since design is for and by humans). I guess the only thing that really ties all of these unusual interests together is my passion to break the world down into visual parts so I can reference them later when I need them.
I can’t help but want to learn and make. Every opportunity to do so is valuable and interning at Design Kompany is especially appropriate.
I don’t quite know what to expect form this internship yet. But know I will be returning to Carnegie Mellon his fall as a well prepared design sophomore. And if I am allowed to express my crazy self even in the least bit then it will have all been worth while.
