Randomness: the subject of quantum physicist/’MacGyver’ screenwriter Leonard Mlodinow’s May 14. talk

Physicist and writer Leonard Mlodinow will be giving a talk at Seattle Town Hall on Wednesday, May 14 on this topic: Randomness. Cool, huh?

Leonard Mlodinow, a physicist, will give a talk on Randomness at Town Hall on May 14

Mlodinow was a scriptwriter for the television series Star Trek: The Next Generation. And for MacGyver.

MacGyver. Yes. I wonder if SM still has a crush on MacGyver.

MacGyver employs his resourcefulness and his knowledge of chemistry, physics, technology and outdoorsmanship to resolve what are often life or death crises. He spontaneously creates inventions from simple items to solve these problems. —Wikipedia on MacGyver.

Interestingly, Mlodinow also wrote for Night Court.

And in his spare time, co-authored A Briefer History of Time with Stephen Hawking. In that book, they talk about the evolution of complexity.

Here’s what Town Hall says about the Mlodinow’s upcoming talk:

Mlodinow takes an irreverent look at how randomness influences our lives, and how difficult it can be to recognize. He demonstrates the surprising power of randomness by highlighting the lives of the unpredictable characters who contributed groundwork to the study of probability. He deploys history along with everyday anecdotes to show us how we misinterpret the world around us, and believe we have control or understanding, when in fact, we are gleaning too much from far too little. —Seattle Town Hall

Mlodinow received his PhD from the University of California at Berkeley. His doctorate was on quantum theory in infinite dimensions. Science writers everywhere will be happy to know the whole thing was less than 30 pages. Succint! —DK

I didn’t know that Mlodinow wrote for Night Court. This was another one of my favorite shows and it was funny. You can tell that Mlodinow is an amazing speaker and writer because he can cover any subject.
