Design Kompany Vlog? | Plastic Bottles Killing Planet

I’m going to a Society of Professional Journalists‘ class today on video blogging. The Seattle Times’ Cory Tolbert Haik, an interactivity producer there, is giving the two hour talk over pizza and bottled waters. Of course I’ll refrain from partaking of bottled water because plastic bottles are killing the planet.

Bottled Water

Still, I’m curious to see if I learn how to “vlog,” something I first heard about from Bre Pettis at the blogger’s conference Gnomedex* in 2005.

At the time I was writing for a downtown trade newspaper, and the idea was for me to find out how we could bring blogging into our newsroom. Everyone talks about how newspapers are a dying industry and well, the ones overcontrolled by big business and big government really don’t need to be read, anyways. More independent voices are better. The gist of what people told the FCC the other day, according to the Seattle P-I’s report.

I have a dream that one day all Americans on Fox-owned MySpace will wake up to reality and get angry about the “war.” This dream is inspired by a Vietnam vet I met today who told me he can’t believe this is happening again. And that it’s worse. Because media’s not questioning things–instead, media’s a tool owned by the people running the war. But more dishearteningly, it’s worse because we the people aren’t angry.

Maybe Design Kompany’ll soon be posting our own video commentaries here, like Current.com and Charles and Ray Eames. Maybe I’ll call the first one Happy Veterans Day for No Reason. Stay tuned. –DK

*Design Kompany rewent to Gnomedex in 2007. This time, we did the graphic design for the Gnomedex 2007 program.
