It’s almost October. That means that another installation of drunken doodling sessions we call “designers’ korner” is afoot once again. For a change of scenery, this time we are holding it at Hideout, a not-so-hidden First Hill institution circa 2005. This should’ve been an obvious venue choice, given its art connection and inclination toward on-location doodling (see the pic above), but it had somehow escaped our collective minds so far.
There certainly is an allure to something that’s ostensibly hidden. A friend was talking to me recently about a new-found popularity of “speakeasy”s in SF, complete with password-protected front door and such. There’s also a nice comfortable space there, marketing-wise, for things that aren’t so obviously “hip” or “popular” but is very cool, especially when get-rich-quick isn’t the only objective. Hideout has been one of my favorite bars in Seattle since I first went there in Jan 2006, and I suspect many would readily agree with me, but it seems to have managed to stay under the radar despite the popularity. Maybe it’s the location. Maybe it’s the dark, extremely intimate decor. Maybe it has a very strict policy about eighty-sixing loud folks.
