‘Hit the high note’

Anything is possible

Dream Kitchen

Design Kompany hosts the next Dream Kitchen on Wednesday, February 28. This is an open brown bag session for creative people from 12 to 2pm at our office at 1508 E. Olive Way.

At this weekly “anything goes” roundtable, we tend to cover many subjects.

Last week it started with everyone talking about their muses. For me, it’s the things I surround myself with. The city of Seattle inspires me, because it’s beautiful. Laura Totten of Counting Stars Photography said her muses were the poets at the Seattle Poetry Slam. Dipika said her muse was her longtime pen pal. Akira also said the city inspires him. Software developer Leo Shklovskii proudly said his muse was whatever woman he was with.

We continued talking about what inspires us, and the urge to create. At one point, Leo said something that stuck with me.

Hit the high note.

He mentioned the iPod as an example. Sure, it may not have the most features, and you may get more storage with other MP3 players, but consumers have made the iPod a ubiquitous, must-have gadget. Why? Because Apple just nailed it. It’s sleek, cool, easy to use, and so on.

But this isn’t a plug for Apple. It’s a reminder to get inspired, and to do good work. Find your muse. Take care of him/her/it. And when you create something, just do us a favor: Hit the high note.
