If I could skip this step, I would. I hate goodbyes.
But they matter.
They mean, “I care.”
That’s why I’m writing.
Design Kompany is leaving Seattle.
We’re having a yard sale this weekend at Kornerhaus.
The good things
I want to share with you why we’re moving.
Every couple of years, DK does this.
We started in Raleigh-Durham, in North Carolina. I went to New York. Akira went to Africa. Then we converged in County Cork, Ireland. Seattle’s been everything we were looking for when we came: big, bright, energizing.
But now that we’ve a 15-month old, it’s time to move closer to home.
But there’s also maturing.
Which means knowing time is short. Life is short. You should enjoy the ride.
Paths may not recross. This time won’t come back.
Et cetera.
And that is why DK is lucky to have been in Seattle.
In five years, we’ve gotten to know some amazing, creative, and very talented people. Budding rock stars. Beautiful knitters. Surgeons. Photographers. The most incredible portrait artist I have met in real life (this is you, MZ). Architects who were nice enough to trust DK with their branding. Software developers of all sorts whose minds work in mathematical and alarmingly rapid ways. Bus people. Sidewalk people. Kids with large bookbags who need help when they drop their stuff. Bakers. People who serve baked goods. Baristas (now that I’ve lived here, I can’t call them “coffee servers.”) Restauranteurs. People who fish. People who ski. Sail. Kayak. Hike. Bike (yes, that’s you JR). I’m talking about people who do things. Get excited about things. Make stuff happen. This is energizing. This is what I’ve loved most about living in Seattle.
DK will miss you.
Thanks for a great party.

You will be missed! Thanks for bringing such kindness, creativity and inspiration to Seattle.
Can’t even begin to count the ways in which you will be missed. Definitely for your energy, passions, and thoughtfulness about, well just about everything. But more than anything I think just for being such damn good, honest, caring friends. We will miss you greatly.
RHT xx
Awww.
Best of luck with your move, so sorry we never got out to Seattle to see you! Loved your video - so good to see you both.
Best wishes, Catherine & Vincent, West Cork
Seattle will miss you. I’m happy that you guys are ready for the next change but will be sad to see you go. I’ll miss randomly running into you on the streets and at events.
