Talk about mixed media. Here’s a scan of a screenprint I made from a photo I took in the Al Maha desert, which is just outside city limits of Dubai. I was in the United Arab Emirates as part of an around-the-world travel deal, and I will never forget the safari trip into the dunes with the peaks of the Hajjar Mountains. Remember that Jim Morrison video? That kind of fantasmic realism.

Dipika, that is a picture of the desert? To me it looked rather like the baleen of a blue whale. I guess our eyes see what we want to see, or in my case, see what they want to sea.
Wow, looking at the image in this context really does change things. But I promise, it’s the desert. I have a whole collection of desert imagery, not just from the Al Maha but also the Thar, which is in Rajasthan, India. Someday I’d like to get to an American desertscape, maybe in California or White Sands in New Mexico.
While on the topic of deserts, perhaps I am a bit late…
I just wanted to add that indeed, the California deserts are gorgeous and worth exploring before they disappear beneath massive resorts, strip malls and golf courses…check out this bizarre book by the “emigre” font house depicting the So Cal desert… http://emigre.com/EB.php?id=111
Great post.
Thanks,
