This is it. I’m done.
A year ago at Thanksgiving I started experimenting with editing super short film segments for YouTube. Start is gonna be my last one.
It was an idea I got from Seattle Times‘ web editor Cory Haik at a workshop on how to shoot film for the web.
Shooting short films
Her point was that you don’t have to get all fancy to start making things happen. Inertia is the thing that holds us back.
Just take something simple and start shooting. Use a tripod, ideally. But if you don’t have one, hold your camera in close and keep still. Oh, and don’t shoot more than 15 minutes of anything. Get three shots: setting the scene, close in, and a person saying something.
After her talk I got inspired. I made ‘End.’
DK’s series ‘Moving Pictures’
Making the series of 13 shorts after that was like sketching. I doodled with my small handheld Canon and iMovie. With the exception of one random one with footage I took in India, all of them are under 2 minutes. Who has time to see anything longer?
And now I’m ready to try more complex stuff.
Feedback on these first ones is welcome. So if you’re out there, tell me what you think from Start to End.
Cheers, and Happy New Year.

I like this film!
Thank you!
