“‘Sustainability’ is a term we try to stay away from,” Jon Junker, a partner at Architects-cum-furniture-designer team graypants, explained why he was inspired to make his design out of waste material, but wouldn’t call it “green” or “sustainable.”
“It’s an empty buzz word. To make something out of recycled material isn’t ’sustainable’ in itself. We try to think about the full cycle of the products’ life. We made four chairs in a series, each chair made of a reused material. Each became a product, and a mold for the next product.”
Jon and Seth of graypants were on hand last Friday for our co-working/play session Dream Kitchen. Ten people gathered around to work a little, chat a little, and generally get inspired. With their laser-cut cardboard “scrap” lamps, hand-formed pry-wood chair and a mini slide show (all putting our IKEA furniture to shame), there was more than plenty of inspiration to go around! Ideas were exchanged (”Gynecologists’ chair!” someone suggested. Seth: “Sure, there’s a market for everything.”), sandwiches were shared, stories swapped (”you know, I have this friend who constantly complains about her ‘job’—she goes ‘you know what I mean?’ and I go, ‘noooo.’”).
I’d like to think everyone came away a bit jazzed, ready to do something interesting. Dipika and I sure did!
The next “Kitchen” is going to be on Friday, May 23. We are going to have just three more sessions, and be taking a break for a little bit. If you have been curious but haven’t yet checked out these co-working opportunities, now’s the time to get in line! RSVP to “kitchen at design-kompany dot com”…
