Artists and designers like to talk about negative space. The big white empty space above, for example. In art school, they like to get you to draw chairs and stools a lot because there are plenty of opportunities to explore negative space. In life drawing class, you’d get nice triangle-shaped negative spaces when the model placed his hands on his hips.
