City of Seattle forum on Safe Parks, Green Neighborhoods: Nov. 19

Design Kompany's cardsOver the last year Design Kompany has done a lot of brand identity design projects for architects. D+A Studio and Case Architects, for example…

And in learning about the way Case and D+A design living spaces, we got to know a bit about the importance of green space to go around buildings. Places people can walk around and meet is important for building community. Something we could use more of here in these United States of America.

Design Kompany’s really interested in both green space (we’ve taken Cal Anderson Park as the inspiration for our own brand design) and community (we love gathering people together for parties and open-invite happy hours).

Inspiration for Design Kompany's identity

Because Design Kompany cares about open space and open community, I thought I’d share this press release I just got from the City of Seattle.

It’s about a lawyer from California who’s working to bring more safe parks to local communities.

Nationally, there are unfair disparities in access to safe places to play, an example being in Los Angeles where 91% of people living near toxic sites are people of color…

Learn how advocates and activists are building a new urban green movement to maximize public access to safe places to live, learn, work, play and pray while ensuring the fair treatment of people of all colors, cultures, and incomes.

Robert García is an attorney who has influenced the investment of over $20 billion for healthy livable communities for all in the Los Angeles region. García is a leader in the urban park movement, bringing the simple joys of playing in the park and school field to children in park-starved communities. (See Flickr gallery)–City of Seattle

    Parks and Recreation staff heard many comments about expanding pools, especially outdoors. There were also many comments about integrating the urban village concept to recreation programs and having a variety of recreational opportunities close to home. People felt that Parks and Recreation facilities were well maintained and beautiful and provided a lot of great programs and activities. Many people wanted to see more health and fitness programs. Generally, the meeting was very positive about Parks and Recreation.

    Parks are a great feature of city living and certainly creating more of them will help cut down on crime and clean the air. Money is the usual problem. But for anyone living in LA lofts, the addition of more parks would improve real estate value and encourage more people to live closer to resources.

    @Loftway,

    The same could be said of other forms of public space, like wider sidewalks, maybe with some public art. The thing that happens when developers give some of the space to the public can be beautiful—like these awesome pools of water I remember on a walk in Vancouver, B.C., and populate the ground level of a building’s footprint. More people around makes a building seem… nicer.

    Cheers for the comment!
