On the plane home from Scandinavia two days ago, they served us optional alcoholic beverages with our meal trays.

The person next to me, a young kid on his way to Anchorage for the first time direct from Sweden, ordered gin and juice.

Now, I am a fan of gin and juice but am sort of a snob about my gin. Which I had to say.

D: You know, I like gin and juice, but I’m kind of a snob about my gin.
K: Yeah?
D: Yeah, it has to be Bombay Sapphire.
K: …
D: ‘Cause, you know, I’m Indian. I like the name.
K: That is the best gin. [Reads the name on his newly acquired see-through flask, looks slightly disenchanted].
D: …
K: What did you get?
D: Wine. Red. I don’t know what kind… oh, French. That’s fine. I’m not a snob about my wine. Beer, yes.
K: What kind of beer do you like?
D: Belgian, of course.

On Monday, Nov. 5, friends of Design Kompany and us invite all y’all artists and designers to join in for drawing and general philosophizing at Stumbling Monk, the best bar in Capitol Hill, for pints and Chimays. This has been going for some months now and we always have a ball of a time. Stop by to see.

You can bring food. You can bring cards. You can bring Tic Tacs. Oreos. Classic novels. Pulp fiction. Tie-dye kits. Assorted nuts. In other words, any random item you can think of at all.

But please, don’t bring Belgian beer, ’cause Stumbling Monk’s a bar ’specially for that and the lads working there might frown upon it. -DK
